Kurt Zouma to be assessed before Lyon trip after twisting ankle in Brentford defeat

David Moyes has revealed Kurt Zouma will be assessed by West Ham's medical team after twisting his ankle during the first half of his side's 2-0 defeat by Brentford.

Zouma, 27, had to be replaced by Issa Diop in the 29th minute at the Brentford Community Stadium after sustaining the knock.

“Kurt's twisted his ankle and we don't know how bad it is,” said Moyes.

“We'll get him checked but I hadn't had a chance to speak to the medical team yet. Coming off is not a good sign so hopefully it's not too bad.”

Moyes will be hoping the former Chelsea defender can shake off the injury before the second leg of West Ham's crucial quarter-final tie against Lyon.

West Ham travel to France with the scores level after Jarrod Bowen and Tanguy Ndombele netted for their respective sides at the London Stadium on Thursday.

Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney scored for Brentford in the second half after Zouma had been replaced.

Zouma's fellow central defender Craig Dawson received a knock to the face but was able to play the full 90 minutes.

“We thought he broke his nose on Thursday,” added Moyes.

“I think in the first minute he got caught on the nose so he would've been in real pain throughout the game with it.”

Typical! We've been relatively lucky with injuries if not so with suspensions.
Looks likely our entire first Choice back 4 or 5 will be missing or in Coufal's case half fit and possibly playing out of position..
Got a bad feeling about tomorrow!

The more corners we win, the better chance we have of a win.

Timing is everything and the timing of this injury couldn’t be any worse.
Diop is shit and Dawson struggles next to him. We tend to get dragged out of position when Diop plays trying to second guess his positioning which is the worst part of his game.

GSP, I think you've just hit the nail on the head and Rice will have to drop deeper almost as a third centre half in front of Dawson and Diop and let Soucek play further forward like he did in his first season with us. Hopefully he can find his scoring boots/head again and nick us a goal but Dec playing more defensively will be a must.

Could possibly be Fredericks on the right and Coufal goes out on the left which I am sure he has done before, albeit briefly.
In a way in the circumstances, that might be better for Diop having experience next to him as he is a confidence player.
Rice will have to play as deep as he has ever played perhaps.
Seems attack may be our best form of defence.

Great, Diop against Chelsea & Arsenal then. So easily avoidable

Terrible news, you feel cheated when it was just for nothing and so easily avoidable. Have to hope Ogbonna comes back now.

Bugger it's true

Sounds like a cunning plan, Vexed - pick up a couple of red cards while we're at it.

I'd like us to go full cynically dirty and defensive. Frustrate them. Nick a goal a set piece or breakaway goal. Be absolute cunts. Fouls them, dive, get on at the ref. Play for pens if needs be.

That looks like a car crash in slow motion.

Tete will rip our LB a new one for sure whoever plays there, even Johnson couldn't stop him and he's the best choice, shame it doesn't sound as if he will be available.

Our best chance will be to keep possession and try to keep it in their half.

Re: Kurt Zouma to be assessed before Lyon trip after twisting ankle in Brentford defeat ZOUMA OUT
Without Zouma, Johnson and Cresswell available it will be a tall order to get thru ( understatement of the year :-( ). The defence will be weakened I suspect we all know that. I guess the likes of Diop and Masuaku could both have the games of their lives on the same night but to mitigate the risk a bit I would probably look to place one of Coufal or Fredericks on the left ( Arfur is liable for a rickett even when he is playing regularly and well and this season he has hardly played).

Its not ideal to say the least. A right footed player on the left but I guess Fredericks might be the best to get it as they had a lot of pace down their right and at least he might be able to handle Tete or whatever his name was and their left wing back?

Going to need a lot of things to go our way thats for sure. But in the back of the mind I keep thinking it might be as happened at Southampton in the cup and last Sunday against Brentford. We tried, put in effort but never really looked like getting anything.

Hope springs eternal I suppose but I would take a draw and penalties now I think.

What about a properly shaky back 5?

Fredericks Coufal Dawson Diop Masuaku

Pray that Daws can hold it together?

We'll be needing Dawson to be an absolute colossus then. Fucking hell, get through Seville.and end up playing our fucking reserve team in a Europe quarter final. Ridiculous situation.

This is all on Moyes.

The board, chief scout, Brady and Moyes were to blame for not signing anyone in January, but this is all on him.

Diop will probably do well in a one off game of this magnitude. It’s when he has a run of games he turns to shit.
